Online Couples Therapy in Massachusetts (Including Boston)
"I can think of no better group for focusing on couples work and the needs of couples. Their approach is compassionate, informed by cutting-edge research and evidence-based practice."
-Stephen Bradley, LICSW and Child Trauma Academy FellowThe Northampton Center for Couples Therapy provides online couples therapy to couples located in Boston and throughout Massachusetts, as well as Vermont and Maine. As a specialty practice devoted exclusively to couples treatment, we integrate Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Pragmatic/Experiential Couples Therapy (PET-C) to deliver structured, research-informed care.
Finding a highly trained couples therapist in your immediate community can be challenging — especially if you are seeking structured, evidence-based work grounded in leading clinical models.
Through secure telehealth sessions, couples across Massachusetts — including the Greater Boston area, Cambridge, Brookline, and communities throughout Western Massachusetts — can access our specialty couples therapy center from the privacy and convenience of home.
Our work is not generalized teletherapy. We are devoted exclusively to couples treatment and bring the same rigor, structure, and depth to online sessions as we do in person.
Couples in acute distress may also consider our Couples Urgent Care option for rapid access support.
Why Choose Online Couples Therapy?
Online couples therapy allows you to:
- Work with a deeply specialized, couples-only practice
- Access research-grounded treatment regardless of location
- Maintain privacy and discretion
- Integrate therapy into demanding professional and family schedules
- Continue structured work consistently and efficiently
For many couples in Greater Boston and throughout the Commonwealth, telehealth provides access to a level of specialization that may not be readily available locally.
The format may be virtual. The depth and precision remain the same.
Our Clinical Approach
Online couples therapy follows the same structured process as our in-person work:
- Joint assessment session
- Individual meetings with each partner
- The Gottman Relationship Checkup
- Structured feedback session
- Targeted, ongoing intervention
Our clinicians integrate multiple leading evidence-based models, including:
- Gottman Method Couples Therapy
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
- Pragmatic/Experiential Couples Therapy (PET-C)
- Advanced training in relational intimacy and sex therapy
This integrative approach allows us to tailor treatment precisely to the dynamics of your relationship.
We do not rely on a single technique. We draw from rigorous frameworks to create meaningful and sustainable change. For couples seeking immersive, concentrated work, our Private Couples Retreats offer an intensive format.

We provide online couples therapy for relationships navigating:
- High-conflict or gridlocked cycles

Many of the couples we work with are thoughtful, engaged partners seeking structured, research-informed treatment that moves beyond supportive conversation.
For Couples in Boston and Surrounding Communities
If you are located in Boston or the Greater Boston area, telehealth allows you to access highly structured, research-informed couples therapy without geographic limitation.
Couples across Greater Boston — including communities such as Cambridge, Brookline, Newton, Wellesley, Lexington, Belmont, Needham, and Arlington — often choose to work with our specialty couples therapy center through secure telehealth.
Similarly, couples throughout Western Massachusetts — including Northampton and Amherst — often appreciate the flexibility and discretion that online therapy provides.
We also offer in-person couples therapy at our Northampton center.
When Online Couples Therapy May Not Be Appropriate
Online couples therapy can be highly effective and clinically rigorous. However, there are circumstances in which a different level of care may be more appropriate.
Telehealth may not be advisable if:
- There is ongoing or escalating physical violence, credible threats of harm, or fear for physical safety
- One or both partners are experiencing active suicidal or homicidal ideation
- There is severe, untreated, or unstable mental illness requiring psychiatric stabilization prior to couples work
- There is active deception or an undisclosed affair that one partner is not prepared to address transparently
In these situations, safety, stabilization, and individual support take precedence before relational work can proceed effectively.
If you are uncertain whether online couples therapy is clinically appropriate for your situation, we encourage you to reach out. We are happy to help you determine the safest and most effective next step.
